Welcome to the Town of Salley!
The Town of Salley was established on December 19, 1887, by three Swiss-German families, John Corbitt, Sr.; John Corbitt, Jr., and John Salley. The settlement became known as "John Town" since the heads of all three families were named "John". Salley was a commercial and transportation center in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries for agricultural goods. It is a town rich in history.
Listed in the National Register of SC in October of 2000, the town's remaining architecture represents styles such as Victorian and Bungalow influences. It is home to the Riley-Sawyer-Salley House constructed in 1888, the Bank of Salley constructed in 1906, the Coca-Cola warehouse constructed in 1924, and the Salley High School Auditorium (currently the Salley Civic Center) constructed between 1936 - 1937; to name a few.
Today Salley is best known for it's annual festival, the Chitlin' Strut! The event was created 55 years ago to raise funds for Christmas lights and has become one of the largest festivals in SC. It is held the Saturday after Thanksgiving starting with a spectacular parade, a souvenir shop, carnival rides, and most importantly, sales of both fried and boiled Chitlin' Plates. The town grows from a population of less than 500 to over 20,000 in a day for this amazing event. Attendees travel from all over, such as North Carolina, Georgia, New York, and Tennessee. It is an event very well worth coming to. The 2024 Chitlin' Strut has been canceled! See you in 2025!!
